"In the 1800s, women would use scraps of wool or wool felt from old clothing and hats to create designs for mats or rugs. They would make circles using coins as a template. Each piece was then stitched in blanket stitch fashion. Sometimes, the mats or rugs were backed with old burlap bags or feed sacks. And to make the piece lie flat, a penny was stitched under one of the circles to weigh it down. Coins were so valuable then, that in today's world, if you are fortunate to find an antique piece containing one, you would have a very rare piece.
My friend Robin loves to create unique items and has given me an "TWEET" yellow bird pincushion that is made with 100 % wool to giveaway to one lucky winner. The hand dyed wool has alot of color variation, which adds to the beautiful character of the pincushion. Perched on top of a pillow, this little bird is surrounded by flowers and even boasts a flower hat! The wings are sewn on with coordinating buttons and are pose able. There are 2 coordinating pins that had a flower top and a pretty leaf. It is stuffed with wool scraps. Her mother, who has been sewing for over 50 years says it's her favorite pincushion. The wool stuffing helps to keep her pins sharp and it looks so cute on her sewing table! The base measures over 5 inches and it's over 6 inches all. Robin likes to create using wool fabric, yarn and roving, beads and buttons, scrapbook materials or combining colors that compliment each other, items with a primitive or country feel.

These cute little candle mats have five jumping bunnies with dainty french knot flower wreaths around their necks. There are five adorable poesy's above their heads. The base is a white color that is hand dyed that the bunnies are sewed on to. The entire mat is sewn with wool using DMC thread. It measures about 9 1/2 inches.

This table mat boasts a patriotic chicken shading himself by a huge sunflower. It's sewn using wool and is sewn on a wool felt base using DMC thread. It measures almost 12x 10 inches.
